Mastering the art of breastfeeding can be a challenge, but finding the positions that work for you can make all the difference. Experimenting with different breastfeeding positions is an important way to ensure a comfortable (and successful) breastfeeding experience for both you and your baby.
I breastfed my son for just shy of two years and tried EVERY position in the book. These are the 4 essential breastfeeding positions that we used and I recommend for all new moms.

4 Essential Breastfeeding Positions
1. Cradle Hold
The cradle hold is the most traditional breastfeeding position and my personal favorite. We used the position from day one all the way through year two. In this position, hold your baby across your lap, with their head resting in the crook of your elbow on the same side as the breast you’re using to feed. Support your baby’s head with your arm, and use your free hand to support and guide your breast into their mouth.
2. Cross-Cradle Hold
The cross-cradle hold, as the name suggests, is a variation of the cradle hold. I found this breastfeeding position most useful in the first few weeks while we were working on latching. For this hold, bring your baby across your body with the arm of the non-nursing side, that hand will support your baby’s neck while your arm will support their body. Use the hand on your nursing side to support and guide your breast into their mouth.
3. Football Hold
The football hold is a great breastfeeding position for mixing up the angle that your baby is nursing from. Breastfeeding at various angles ensures that your baby is draining different areas of your breast, preventing the dreaded clogged milk duct. Trust me, you want to avoid getting a clogged duct at ALL COSTS, and this hold is a great way to do that. To achieve this position, hold your baby along your side, with their head resting on the same arm as the breast that you’re using (like an adorable little football).
4. Side-Lying Position
This position will come in handy during those first few weeks when your baby is nursing around the clock (sometimes every 30 minutes in my case). I didn’t use this position for night feedings (for fear that I would fall asleep), but I did use it throughout the day when I wanted to feel fully relaxed while breastfeeding. For this position, lie on your side with your baby facing you, and use your free arm to support their back and guide them to your breast.
You got this!
Experimenting with different breastfeeding positions is an important way to ensure a comfortable and successful breastfeeding experience. Listen to your body and your baby, and do what feels right for YOU on your unique breastfeeding journey.
